You might have noticed we took a week-long hiatus from the blog. This would be because we were on a family vacation in Hawaii! Woohooooo. The good news is that we are back, tan, relaxed and BETTER THAN EVER! And slightly depressed that our vacation is over. Just a little.
Since Alex is a better writer, I’m letting her write about allllll the details and stories from our family vacation. I mean, she is the travel expert y’all. Expect this post to come next week!
I will stick to telling you all the hidden (and not so hidden) gems we discovered in Maui, Hawaii.
…Maybe I am just the lazier sister. Don’t tell Alex that I’m letting her do all the hard work.
If you ever decide to make the trip to Maui AKA paradise AKA my favorite place on the planet earth, I wholeheartedly insist you make a point to go to all of these places. Just do it and thank me later.
Sorry in advance for possibly making you gain ten pounds. Take all your bikini photos before you read this.
o Lahaina Pizza Company
*Not a picture of pizza. I decided even though pizza is bae, our family is still cuter to show. Okay, back to the original topic…*
HOLY MOTHER OF PIZZA. Seriously, if you are a pizza lover or a carb lover in general, this is a total MUST.
It’s located on Front Street in a town called Lahaina and is tucked away upstairs with a gorgeous view of the ocean. Eating deep-dish pizza, sipping a mai tai and watching the sun go down over Maui? Talk about a dream come true.
Our family favorites are “Sweet Pig” (pineapple does belong on pizza!!!) and “The Works” (for all the meat lovers) and you seriously have to start with the chopped Italian salad. Don’t forget it!!! My family talks about this dang salad year round, so you know it’s good.
P.S. – we always over order and end up with a mountain of pizza we are too stuffed to eat and my mom yells at my dad saying “YOU DO THIS EVERY TIME.”
Two medium pizzas are plenty to feed four people.
o The Road to Hana + Halfway to Hana Banana Bread
If you go to Hawaii and don’t go on the Road to Hana… well, you are dumb. Really, really dumb. (Or maybe you just get carsick easily and in that case, I’m super sorry).
But seriously, this is probably one of the most gorgeous sites to see in Maui and you have to do it at least once! My family has done it 5 times, (we really like waterfalls, okay….), and it never gets old. Basically, it’s a narrow, twisting, sometimes one-lane road that takes you through Maui, on a cliff alongside the coast. Basically, you can die on if you take one wrong turn. Lovely!
The Willett Clan always rents a convertible, cranks up some Jason Mraz, puts the top down and makes a whole day out of the Road to Hana adventure.
Honorable mentions that you must stop at on the Road to Hana include the Three Bears Waterfall, Black Sand Beach and The Seven Sacred Pools. There are a billion places to stop at but take my word- ya don’t want to miss these.
ALSO, YOU HAVE TO GET BANANA BREAD FROM THE HALFWAY TO HANA STAND. It is the best banana bread on the whole island and I could eat a whole loaf in one sitting.
o Hula Hut Hula Pie
Why do all of my hidden gems mainly involve food? (Idk, probably because my spirit animal is a whale).
There is a restaurant in Whaler’s Village on Kaanapali Beach called the Hula Hut and it is where we always start and end our Maui vacation! My favorite part is taking off my shoes, sitting at one of the tables in the sand and kicking back to listen to the live music.
You also MUST get the Hula Pie. It’s a famous dessert on the island and quite honestly what I want to eat every day for the rest of my life. I’m not sure how to describe it other than a slice of heaven (AKA macadamia nut ice cream, hot fudge and a cookie crust… but heaven describes it better).
o Ululani’s Shaved Ice
Not really hidden considering they’re all over the island, but shhhhh let’s pretend I am actually a world-renowned travel blogger. Ululani’s is hands down the best snow cone on the planet earth. If you think differently, feel free to call me out.
They have the most unique flavor combos for those who are daredevils. I always stick with the basics like watermelon or apple (#basic) … Alex always goes for the weird ones like guava and cantaloupe. Gag.
But the best part is you can get a scoop of macadamia nut ice cream in the bottom and HOLY WOW. A shaved ice game changer.
o Snorkeling at Honolua Bay
Everyone in the Willett family prefers a different activity while on vacation. Alex likes reading a Stephen King book on the beach, my dad likes napping in the sun, my mom hides under an umbrella to avoid sunburns. I, on the other hand, love snorkeling. I think I missed my calling to be the Little Mermaid.
My favorite spot to go to in Maui is a little spot called Honolua Bay, which is pictured here. It might not look like the most picturesque Hawaiian beach but it is hands down the best snorkeling in West Maui.
You are probably reading this and wondering why I am telling you this. Well guess what when you go to visit Maui, this totally comes in handy!
There’s no beach and it’s super rocky, but once you make it past the rocks and into the water… it’s like a dang marine wonderland. Plus there are sea turtles. Massive sea turtles. To swim with!?
I LIKE TUTTLES. (If you haven’t seen that YouTube video… ugh)
At the end of the day, I love everything about Maui, Hawaii. It will forever be my favorite spot in the US. (I’d say the world but it’s a tie between Hawaii, Italy and Greece and Australia is still on my bucket list).
If you’re ever lucky enough to take a trip, pinky promise me that you will go to all of these places I listed.
I promise you won’t regret it.
