I’m finding that I often asked about my fitness routine. What I eat, what workouts I do, how I stay motivated throughout the week. Ya know, fitness-y stuff.
While I could write a literal novel on everything I do to stay in shape (don’t worry those posts will come in time, I just have to stock up on sugar-free red bull in order to knock them out), I’ll start by sharing my top 10 tips to live a fit ‘n healthy life.
Don’t forget… little things go a long way, people!
1. Find a workout that you actually enjoy.
When working out is fun, you are more motivated to get off the couch and do it. For me, I prefer HIIT type workouts like at Barry’s Bootcamp. I also love boxing! Anything but straight running. *I will never do a marathon*
But if you need a little boost to enjoy your workout… a cute workout set will 100% do the trick. (Or maybe that’s just me? Idk, I need shopping rehab.) My all white attire is from Cute Booty Lounge and I’m obsessed. I’ll obviously ruin it by sweating off makeup and fake tan, but hey, it looks good?
2. Drink more water.
I make it a point to chug a full glass of water right when I wake up. It’s a great way to fire up your metabolism and keep you hydrated for the day. I also drink a full glass of water before I eat any meal because I find that it helps me eat slower and stay full.
3. Find a workout buddy or accountability partner.
Staying healthy is always more doable when you have someone doing it with you. Whether it is your roommate or your coworker, find your fitness friend. Go try new workouts together, text each other healthy recipes, vent when you are feeling like you aren’t making progress. It’s a lot easier to stay on track when you have someone else to encourage you.
4. Cut the sugar at Starbucks.
I am the world’s biggest coffee drinker. For real.
And for the longest time, I would treat myself to a tasty drink at Starbucks not realizing how much sugar is in each of their drinks. A simple vanilla latte has 35 grams of sugar, people!!! I still let myself go there… everyday… but now I stick to a normal iced coffee with almond milk.
5. Plan your workouts and cheat days ahead of time
Every Sunday I sit down with my planner, look at my schedule and plan that weeks workouts. It is a good way for me to know what I am getting myself into and mentally prepare. If I know I am going out on a Friday or Saturday night, I will pencil in a harder workout those days to counteract the margaritas I am inevitably about to consume.
6. Veggies and protein are your friend. And so is Trader Joe’s Everything But The Bagel seasoning.
I eat pretty clean. Ok, very clean.
Minus when I slip up here and there on the weekends and at happy hour. We are all human, right?
I try to incorporate a serving of veggies or lean protein into every meal. It can be bland but guess what THIS SEASONING IS GOD’S GIFT TO THE EARTH AND MAKES EVERYTHING TASTE DELIGHTFUL. So eat your brussell sprouts, kids.
7. Sleep at least 8 hours a night and limit your naps.
I do not nap during the day. I know, I am a psycho and you probably don’t trust me now.
But my body doesn’t sleep well if it is light outside and when I do try and take naps, I end up just lying in bed longer than needed. Instead, I make sure I get at least 8 hours of sleep a night. It is a magical concept. People call me a grandma for going to sleep so early and there is no way you’ll be able to reach my phone past 11… but haters gonna hate. I am 20x more productive with a full night’s sleep.
8. Pay attention to what you’re eating and read the labels!
You’d be surprised how many things you think are “healthy,” are actually terrible for you! Those Lean Cuisine pizzas (that I sadly love) are pure sodium, people!
I use an app called MyFitnessPal to track when I eat and it helps me be mindful of what I am putting into my body.
9. Find ways to stay moving.
Take the stairs, walk to the grocery store, stretch while watching TV. All these things are quick ways to stay fit and require so little effort! Or be a weirdo like me and do some donkey kicks while watching The Bachelor. Just ask Alex, it happens.
10. Don’t be too hard on yourself + give yourself some self love.
You won’t always be able to live the healthiest life. And you won’t always have the time to get a workout in. Don’t stress if you get off track, life happens and just bounce back the next week!
I am the worst about being hard on myself and too self critical. But instead of beating yourself up, BUILD YOURSELF UP.
