I’ll start by saying this. I am the girliest of girls and if there’s one thing I will splurge on, it’s getting my nails done. Don’t y’all realize how many people look at your hands?! Oh, maybe that’s just me.
I normally have long acrylic nails that my mother hates and calls my nasty witch nails. Personally, I like them AND acrylic nails tend to last me longer than gel manicures because they’re impossible to anxiously pick off (AKA what I do with gel). Well after a solid year of having fake claws, I finally decided to take them off in order to try what every girl in Los Angeles seemed to be talking about.
Color Camp. The nail salon of your dreams.
One of my co-workers came in with the coolest manicure ever and I am not even exaggerating. Each nail was hand painted and three weeks later, I noticed she still had them on and they looked brand new!?
Okay, girl I need to know where you got them done.
She told me about this place I had actually heard of called Color Camp which is located in the Beverly Grove area. After some IG stalking (@color_camp) and a good hour and a half of wasted time later, I was sold. Their Instagram was full of every type of nail pattern known to man and I even saw a couple of my favorite bloggers had gone there for some pampering! I MUST BE A BASIC LOS ANGELES GIRL AND TRY THIS PLACE.
I made an appointment for the next day and was ready to go. NOTE: if you do want to go to Color Camp, make sure you make an appointment online before and stick to your time. If you end up missing your appointment, there’s no grace period.
But you will be on time. Especially if your nail before photo looks like mine.
MY EYES ARE BLEEDING JUST LOOKING AT THIS. Ladies, the long nail look is cute but NOT worth destroying your nails. My nails were paper thin after months of my fake, acrylic nails and I was praying that this nail technician could somehow transform my nubs into strong, even, pretty fingernails. I had made an appointment to get what they call “super gel” which is a little more pricey (okay a lot more pricey) than a normal manicure but promises to help with nail growth and strength. WHICH SWEET BABY JESUS I NEED.
Ok. Fast forward. Let’s do the damn thing!
I walk in and instantly I’m whipping out my phone like a tourist who just saw Beyonce to snap photos because it is so freakin’ aesthetically pleasing. Think white walls, crisp green plants, rows of chairs set up like a bar but instead of cocktails, you get manicures.
Big fan of the minimalist look. If I didn’t have so much crap, I would decorate my room like this. And I must say… Los Angeles really knows how to get people to post on Instagram.
At the front, there’s a wall full of different colors and nail designs, and get this… you can create whatever your little heart desires. They had everything from stripes, to palm trees, to confetti, to abstract art. Naturally, I could not decide on a design to save my life, so I stood there for 30 minutes, changed my mind 3 times and finally settled for… you guessed it, Barbie pink.
But! BUT! I did decide to add some ombre’d foil on top in true, sparkly, Morgan-like fashion. Note: I also saw this design on Instagram and copied it. I am not that creative.
From there, I sat down with my complimentary Lacroix (I still am not sure how to pronounce this fizzy water, but it tastes delightful) and let my manicurist, Liz, take control.
The whole process took only an hour and y’all… I was mesmerized by how detailed this woman was. It was like she was painting the Mona Lisa on my finger tips. When she finally finished up, I was quite shocked at my nail transformation. Gone were the fragile things I had before and finalllllllly my nails were all the same shape, cuticle free and freakin’ sparkling.
Now, let’s talk pricing. In true Los Angeles fashion, I did end up spending a lot of money. My total cost for a super gel manicure and four nail designs was $58. A little more than your normal mani. But here is my counter argument…
Check that out. It was such a fun experience and they truly did do a magical job. And according to my Instagram stalking skills, the super gel manicure is supposed to last up to 31 days. So in the grand scheme of things, that is one manicure a month, totaling to ONLY 696 dollars a year…..
So I regret doing the math but hey, it’s the price we pay for beauty? Right? Right?!
